The Passage of Pixels (La Traversée des Pixels)

Miguel Chevalier, 2012

Generative digital artwork

Materials: alveolar walls of polycarbonate and LED screens

Dimensions: 40 x 4 x 4 m

Themes: rhythmic, harmonic waves amplify the pedestrians’ sensory experience

We find ourselves at the heart of Paris’s ‘Les Halles’ district. During its refurbishment, the Forum des Halles and the team Unibail entrusted Miguel Chevalier with the creation of a digital artwork for the corridor linking the commercial centre and the place Carrée.

In collaboration with Trafik - a graphic and multimedia design agency - as well as the composer Michel Redolfi, Chevalier devised a generative installation which would develop itself along a space 40 meters long and 4 meters tall. This luminous creation - entitled ‘the Passage of Pixels’ - makes use of LED technology.

The corridor is animated by the conjunction of Redolfi’s original musical compositions and multi-coloured graphics panels. Consequently, a number of condensed harmonic waves amplify the pedestrians’ sensory experience. Light diffracts in the alveolar walls, and, by creating kinetic effects, at once reinforces and redefines the corridor’s space.

The Passage of Pixels installation transmutes the corridor into a mythical, spellbinding tunnel.
