Hugo Verlinde

A contemporary artist of the new media, Hugo Verlinde creates installations in which the projected image is combined with the forms and materials of sculpture. His artworks endeavour to describe the life and behaviour of celestial bodies taken as individual entities.   

Verlinde’s work stems from his programming: at 16 years of age, Verlinde  developed a computer program on a programmable graphic calculator. Today, he develops hundreds of mathematical models; each giving birth to a unique visual universe that he then explores. The sense of space evoked by these mathematical universes opens the way to a poetics of space. In these artworks, celestial bodies come to life and behave like sensitive and autonomous individuals. Whether it’s the aurora borealis, nearby stars, burgeoning solar systems, or constellations far away from the centre of our galaxy, the works always concern the dialogue between the public and celestial bodies. 

“My images have always been grounded on space: a curved and sensual space, geometric and carnal, a space trembling with life. My ambition is to incarnate our new relation to space by way of the unique capacities of the digital. I want to link body and space, and make the infinite intimate”.
